You might have an idea, an iota of understanding, but ultimately, without speaking to them or doing any research, you won’t ever truly know.

That’s why Jonathan Kirk, founder of Up to the Light, produces the annual What Clients Think report – now in its 11th year. It’s based on a staggering 680 in-depth client interviews, and offers a brutally honest look at what’s really going on inside the minds of marketing decision-makers.

“We do more client interviews on behalf of agencies than anyone else,” says Jonathan. “It’s not a survey – these are frank, one-to-one conversations. It gives agencies a unique lens into how they’re being seen.”

In this year’s edition, the themes are louder than ever:

  • Clients are overwhelmed. 83% say they’re finding it very difficult to prioritise projects – and 55% say their biggest challenges are internal, not external.
  • Budgets are tight. 70% say they’re being asked to do more with less. That means agencies need to be faster, sharper – and more supportive.
  • AI is coming – ready or not. 73% expect marketing investment in gen AI to increase, but 67% also believe it poses serious risks. Most say their org isn’t ready.
  • And relationships are under pressure. 45% say agencies should be bolder in their recommendations, and only 58% view their agency as a true ‘partner’.
